About Nigel Utton MOst

Nigel Utton

Nigel Utton NPQH holds a first-class master’s in osteopathy from the University of Swansea. Although not a registered osteopath, he advocates for a holistic, natural approach to health, influenced by Dr Andrew Taylor Still’s philosophy, which sees health as a balance of mind, body, and spirit. Nigel specialises in craniosacral therapy, a gentle technique that promotes optimal movement and is suitable for all, including babies. Visit the clinic to experience this balanced approach to wellness.

Nigel's Background

“Nigel studied Russian and French at the University of East Anglia. His first job was as toy librarian at the Hamlet Centre in Norwich. He then briefly had a spell working in Norwich 4 tax office and Martin and Acock accountants. He soon realised he was not suited to the accountancy profession and went off to Portsmouth to study primary education. He worked in a range of primary schools in Hampshire and Kent for 23 years. He was a Headteacher of two primary schools over 10 years.

He loves working with children and babies and he is very skilled at putting them at their ease to allow for gentle cranial treatments.

Nigel became disillusioned with the direction of education which seemed to be more about statistics than developing children. The thought of becoming an osteopath first occurred when he left UEA back in 1986 when he obtained a place at the then British School of Osteopathy. For family reasons that decision was delayed… being resurrected thirty years later when he resigned from education live on radio 5 on the Nicky Campbell show.

Nigel returned to University and spent four years studying for his masters in osteopathy at both the European School of Osteopathy and Swansea University, for which he was awarded a first class.

He decided to retire from the General Osteopathic Council over differences in philosophy and the direction of the profession. Nigel is no longer allowed to describe himself as an osteopath. He therefore chooses to highlight the craniosacral aspects of his education which he received at the European School of Osteopathy and through on-going training.

Sadly the European school is no longer functioning which means huge talent has been lost to the profession.

Nigel is now secretary and a founder member of Thinking Osteopathically – a consortium co-operative of healers who have qualifications in osteopathy but are not necessarily registered with the GOSC.

Over the last century, using the original principles developed by Dr Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of osteopathy, therapists have refined a variety of techniques aimed at restoring health through optimal movement, from the smallest cell to the largest joints.

A key advancement came from Still’s student, Sutherland, who developed craniosacral therapy —a gentle approach to relieving restrictions throughout the body, including delicate joints in the ear and cranium. This method is suitable for all, particularly beneficial for infants whose bodies are still developing.

We look forward to welcoming you to the clinic, where Nigel will work to restore balance and harmony to your health.

FAQs

Your osteopath will need to be able to see and physically examine areas of your body contributing to your complaint. We use drapes and towels to ensure your dignity during treatment.

Patients who are uncomfortable undressing to their underwear are welcome to wear shorts, sports bra or close-fitting garments.

Young people under the age of 16 will only be treated with an accompanying adult. Everybody else is welcome to bring a trusted companion to their appointment.

During your first appointment, Nigel will ask you about your medical history and lifestyle, as well as any symptoms you may be experiencing. Please bring with you a list of any medications prescribed by your doctor. This is very important as it will help him to make an accurate diagnosis and suggest appropriate treatment.

Nigel will then assess the areas of your body causing discomfort. He will examine you for any disharmony in the soft tissues and stiffness in the joints. His approach is holistic so he will be examining your whole body – as anomalies in one area can be the cause of discomfort elsewhere.

He will explain what he is doing and seek consent throughout the process.

If you become uncomfortable physically or emotionally please let Nigel know.

Most of the techniques we use are gentle and painless. The nature of your complaint, however, might make you more sensitive to pain and we always value your feedback if you find a particular treatment exacerbates your symptoms.

Some patients experience a ‘treatment reaction’ while their body readjusts to the effects of the treatment. If this has not improved within 48-hours please ring us for further support.

“At the start of your first appointment, Nigel will record information about your medical history and lifestyle, as well as any symptoms you may be experiencing. This is essential in helping him to make an accurate diagnosis and suggest appropriate treatment.

Your records will be treated as confidential in accordance with standards of practice set out by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

If you wish, you may request a copy of your notes, but you may be charged an administration fee for this.”

Nigel studied for four years at both the European School of Osteopathy and Swansea University. He obtained a first class masters in osteopathy. As part of his course at the European School he studied craniosacral therapy with Sue Turner one of the world experts in her field.

As stated earlier, Nigel has retired from the General Osteopathic Council register and, as such, is no longer allowed to use the title osteopath.
